What is a submissive? Well, if you would have asked me before i was married, i probably couldn't have said much.  i was a noob (sexually).  Yeah, i've a couple of partners before i met my Wife, but it was always very "vanilla".  Even when my Wife and i started dating, we were very much vanilla.
